GOD'S REJECTED KING explores the spiritual agonies of Saul, Israel's first king. Saul is stunned and terrified when told he is to be the nation's king. He questions God's decision and asks for God's guidance, but all he receives is God's silence. Saul battles Israel's enemies, suffers the harsh dictates of the prophet Samuel, and contends with his obsessive fear of David. Though Saul is often seen as a failure in the rest of the Bible, many of his questions are shared by believers today Why do some sense God's presence and others do not? Why does God choose to reveal Himself to some and not to others? How can we know what is the right thing to do? What does God expect of us? Saul's story is a tragic one but it is also the story of a man who tried, not always successfully to be useful to his people and faithful to his God.

Around 1000 BC, some say 50 years before, some 100 years later, the tribes of Israel clamored for a king, someone to lead an army to protect their land from the numerous hostile neighboring tribes who constantly invaded their land and farms. God tells Samuel, the prominent prophet of the Israelite tribes, that he should anoint Saul as the first human king of Israel, as long as they continued their covenant with God. After a reign of 20 to 40 years, King Saul fails to follow a command of God through Samuel to kill all the tribe of Amalekites and all their herds. Saul initially fails to kill the king and the better livestock. The event becomes a symbol of Saul’s disobedience of God’s commands, and Saul, rejected by God, is later killed by the Philistine tribe as his kingdom is given to David.

Saul was a tall, handsome charismatic person who symbolized people’s desire to follow a charismatic leader, while only casually following the commandments of God. Rabbinical theology has opposing views and interpretations of the story, such as whether he was simply a weak character unfit to be king or a good person who occasionally stumbled. The biblical text is sometimes vague and contradictory giving rise to different points of view.

Baesler’s novel of Saul tells the story from Saul’s point of view, getting into the consciousness of Saul, like a modern novel, illuminating a character with the frailties and emotions no different from modern man.

Although Saul was tall and handsome, in the novel he sometimes lacked self-confidence, looking for explicit directions, and cannot understand why God doesn’t talk to him directly. Raised by a wealthy, dominant father, Saul and his wife continued living and working on his father’s farm until he was thirty, the dutiful loving son. Maybe somewhat dependent on the direction and reinforcement of his dominant (helicopter) father. When Saul unexpectedly becomes king, he is hesitant in making decisions, swayed by the desires of his troops and, like all leaders who lack self-confidence, extremely jealous of the decisive David. Then Saul reacts to David in a rage that intensifies over time.

Saul slowly falls into deeper depressions as he fails to understand the absolutes of God’s commands. A certain modern relativism seeps into Baesler’s Saul, much like a child that does most but not all of what his parents expect. Baesler explores the building of Saul’s rage, the inability to separate the importance of God’s commands from the unimportant directions of his prophet, and his ultimate confusion in his inability to hear God speak.

Not satisfied with the protection and ancient covenant with God, the people demanded a strong king but got one who suffered the same frailties as modern man.

This was a great read. I received a human perspective of the Biblical man. Plus it was most enjoyable!
Recellent book asking why some people hear Goda while ithers do not (knowingly) hear God.
Well written. I enjoyed the depth of the characters and the pace of the story. I really enjoyed this story!
I have a new perspective on Saul and his search for God. Marvelous story, well written
"What portion of life is by God defined? What portion is the product of the human mind?" These questions and more are asked by the author as he imagines the thoughts and emotions of Saul, first king of the sons of Israel. This is a compelling interpretation that is very well written. Saul, before he dies, finds, "I'm king of only one last thing my life." To truly understand that statement, one must read this book!
I didn't expect this book to be such a page turner! I love biblical stories in novel form and this book did not disappoint! It was full of so much emotion and suspense. It provided an interesting perspective on how people related to God in biblical times and really gets you thinking about how we relate to God in our own lives. The author gave us an amazing and powerful view into the life of Saul. This is the kind of story that keeps you thinking about it long after you turn the last page. Great read!
Dr. Baesler brings forward a powerful and engaging version of the story of Israel’s first king, Saul, as covered in the Books of Samuel of the Old Testament. It is apparent that Dr. Baesler’s years of missionary work, pastoring, teaching, and doctoral studies have honed his storytelling skills to the point of being one of today’s top contributors in the genre of Biblical Fiction (in the Realist form). The end result is a detailed story of Saul’s life and times . . . complete with Saul’s inner most thoughts as he grapples with the challenges of warring nations, family feuds, and a doubting faith. Using his imagination while remaining faithful to the scriptural texts, Dr. Baesler produces a credible and all too human story that people of faith today will connect with.

Dr. Baesler doesn’t back away from some very difficult bible passages that are part of Saul’s story, such as Israel’s army utterly destroying an enemy city, ruthlessly killing not just the opposing army, but also innocent women and children in the streets. The reader encounters more detail of this gut-wrenching scene than can be found in the pages of the bible, painted with realism and emotion in ways that one can indeed imagine must have been present during Saul’s escapade. Likewise, when Saul challenges his nemesis David to cut body parts from enemy soldiers and David shows up later with the “trophies”, here too we find detail wrapped in imagery and realism that is both haunting and curiously engaging.

The most thought-provoking aspect of Dr. Baesler’s work, however, lies in his invitation to examine our own faith through the eyes of Saul. We literally feel Saul’s emotional pain as he struggles mightily to hear God, and we see that even Israel’s first King felt inadequate and ungrounded in his decisions due to “God’s silence”. Saul never felt that he made a connection with God despite his repeated efforts. Do we experience this today? The reader might ask how he or she has ever been incapable of feeling God’s presence, or unable to detect answers to earnest prayers (at least THE answers expected), while surrounded by family and friends who appear to have no issues communing with God. The notion is honest. Was the silence due to Saul's behavior? Was God paradoxically silent as a way of honing Saul's faith? Or did Saul merely have a difficult time listening when God was actually there for him? Readers can form their own perspective as they also consider how this plays out in their own life. Regardless of each theological approach to these deep questions, Dr. Baesler has produced a thoughtful and thought-provoking work that is highly entertaining, thematically topical for today, and true to the scriptural storyline of Saul.
